KoA 10.9.2020 – The DJI Mavic 2 is the new top model from DJI for the ambitious user. Who can need this device and what there is to consider, we look at in the following lines.
Striking and cool are the (distance) sensors on all sides, which keep the device safely in the air. This works extremely well: The drone reliably stops in front of obstacles and stands in the air as if nailed. Only with fine structures such as branches or wires, the sensors do not always strike. Due to the many sensors, the drone is also well suited for indoor flights.
The new 20MP camera takes good pictures and beautiful 4K videos. The difference to the predecessor model DJI Mavic 1 is striking, almost as the technical data suggest. The version “Zoom” with zoom camera is a nice gadget, but qualitatively not very convincing. For inspections or search & rescue, the zoom function can be useful, for photographers or filmmakers the resulting image quality is not sufficient.
The flight time of nominally 29 minutes is decent but not outstanding, especially since in practice there are still 22-24 minutes left.
The remote control fits well in the hand and holds the mobile phone securely in position. If you want to avoid the fiddling with your smartphone: a remote control with screen is available as an option. The DJI Go 4 is usually easy to use and offers good assistance in communication with the drone.
On the part of data protection, there is no news: The recorded data ends up in one or the other form on Chinese servers. If you don’t want that, you can’t do much about it, because sooner or later the drone will have to be connected to the network to install updates.
The DJI Mavic 2 Fly More Package accessory package comes as usual with additional parts that you can often use well: bag, 2 batteries, charging bench, filter, cable and propeller.
The device can be repaired reasonably well. The components are all redesigned but can be found in the usual place. Only gimbal/camera is still difficult to open and hardly repairable. Thus, even with this drone, major gimbal damage often ends in a total loss.
Conclusion: The DJI Mavic 2 is a fantastic drone and highly recommended for the ambitious user. The upgrade from the previous model DJI Mavic Pro is worthwhile because of the better camera and the good indoor flight capability.
